Tooth decay (caries) occurs primarily as a result of plaque build-up. Plaque is largely made up of bacteria, plus sugar, water and dead skin cells. Caries form when sugar from food diffuses into plaque, where it is changed by bacteria to acids. Acids lower plaque pH and dissolve tooth enamel. Regular cleaning and avoiding refined sugar is essential to avoid tooth decay and gum disease.
