Capsicum is the fruit of the Capsicum plant, which belongs to the nightshade family, along with potatoes, tomatoes, aubergine and tobacco. It contains carotenoids, flavonoids and vitamin C. Capsicum is known as chilli or cayenne. It contains an active part called ‘capsaicin’, which gives the fruit its spicy heat and redness. Applied to the skin, capsaicin stimulates blood flow and promotes natural warmth to joints and muscles. As a food, capsaicin helps balance blood lipids (fragile fats) and cholesterol levels, especially ‘bad’ LDL. It helps maintain healthy blood flow, reduce blood stickiness and regulate blood pressure and heartbeat. Capsicum supports healthy digestion, stimulates production of stomach juice and appetite, minimises wind and regulates bowel movement. It promotes the release of endorphins – the ‘feel good’ brain chemicals - and supports heavy metal detox.
