Nutrient - Antioxidant eye nutrients

Antioxidant eye nutrients may help in maintaining healthy eyesight, and healthy blood supply to the eye muscles and nerves.

The nutrients contained in this combination formula includes vitamins, minerals, carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin, extracts of bilberry, and tomato (a source of lycopene).

Carotenoids are naturally occurring pigments found in certain plants with potent antioxidant properties. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two carotenoids found in high levels in the macula region of the eye where they may help to protect it against light-induced free radical damage.

Lycopene is a red pigment present at high levels in tomatoes, and acts as a free radical quencher in ocular tissue.

Bilberry is high in antioxidant substances called flavonoids that may help maintain eye health.

Vitamin B2 helps to maintain normal eye structure.

Free radicals have been implicated in the development and progression of a number of eye conditions including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts. Antioxidants help to mop up these free radicals. Vitamins A, C and E have innate antioxidant activity. The minerals zinc and selenium are important cofactors for antioxidant enzymes.

Retinal zinc levels have been shown to decline with age.

Vitamin A plays an important role in the adaptation of the eye to light and night vision.

Vitamin C is found in high concentrations in the lens of the eye.

Vitamin E has antioxidant properties and helps maintain the health of the blood vessels and cell membranes.
