Copper is concentrated in the liver, heart, brain, kidneys and hair. It helps absorb and use iron and maintains healthy myelin (sheath surrounding nerves). Copper forms part of the enzymes needed for making energy and melanin (skin and hair pigment). It is involved in vitamin C metabolism and helps balance cholesterol levels. Copper is important for the body’s own antioxidant enzyme ‘superoxide dismutase’ (SOD). It is important for the sense of taste, for making collagen and elastin, for bone development and for healthy reproductive, cardiovascular and immune systems function. Antacids deplete levels. It must be balanced with zinc and molybdenum.
