Hyaluronic acid (Sodium hyaluronate) is a natural protein, which makes up part of the skin’s connective tissue. Around 50% of the body’s hyaluronic acid is found in the skin’s epidermis (surface layer) and dermis (deep layer). The body’s natural supply decreases with age. Added to skin creams, it helps skin absorb and retain water. It is believed to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. Hyaluronic acid is also a known antioxidant and can help support healthy gums.
