L. acidophilus is a highly active, colonising bacterium found in the mouth, bowel and vagina. It makes an enzyme called lactase, which digests lactose (milk sugar) and helps other sugars get digested. Extra may be useful after antibiotics and illness. It may help balance healthy cholesterol levels and support healthy vaginal flora. L. acidophilus makes substances which help minimise harmful gut pathogens. It helps with nutrient digestion and absorption and healthy bowel movement. L. acidophilus may be helpful during and after antibiotics.
