Lignans are phytonutrients, which are high in dietary fibre. Plant lignans are changed in the bowel to human lignans by friendly bacterial fermentation. Lignans may help maintain the health of the heart and immune system. They help regulate healthy bowel movement and help cleanse the bowel. They also act as oestrogens in the body, thereby helping regulate hormone function, by balancing the levels of oestrogen in relation to progesterone. Flax seeds are an excellent natural source of lignans.
