These yellow, fat-soluble members of the carotenoid family of antioxidant pigments are found in yellow, green and orange fruit and vegetables and egg yolk. Concentrated in the lens, macula and optic nerve of the eye, they help protect eyes by filtering harmful ultra-violet (UV) light and by quenching damaging excess free radicals. They may also help protect the skin against harmful excess free radicals. In supplements, lutein and zeaxanthin are sourced from marigold petal extract.
