This red, fat-soluble member of the carotenoid family of antioxidant pigments gives tomatoes a red colouration. It is concentrated in the testes and prostate and is twice as effective an antioxidant at quenching excess free radicals than beta carotene. Lycopene may inhibit oxidation (rancidity) of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol, fragile fats and DNA. It helps maintain a healthy heart, arteries, eyes and lungs. It also supports the immune system in helping to maintain healthy bowel and prostate.
