Mentha piperita means ‘peppery mint’ in Latin. Peppermint oil contains menthol and has a cool, refreshing fragrance. When applied to skin, menthol acts on blood vessel walls and blood flow, promoting a feeling of coolness, followed by warming and mild redness. This helps support tired muscles and joints, blood circulation and skin tone. As a food, peppermint promotes healthy gut function, bowel movement and digestive comfort, and helps minimise wind. It is also known to help promote perspiration when the immune system is under challenge, to promote restful sleep, to balance mood and to support liver and gall bladder function.
