Potassium is an ‘electrolyte’ and is concentrated inside body cells. It works with sodium and chloride to maintain healthy cell water balance and function. Potassium is important for maintaining normal blood pressure, and a healthy heart and arteries. It is involved in contracting muscles, converting glucose to glycogen for storage and so maintaining normal blood sugar levels, transmitting nerve impulses and secreting hormones. Laxatives, alcohol, steroids and some diuretics deplete levels.
