The bright orange little berries of the sea buckthorn shrub (Hippophae rhamnoides) contain pale orange-coloured oil. This colouration is due to the presence of beta carotene in the berry flesh. Sea buckthorn oil is high in the monounsaturated omega-7 fatty acid ‘palmitoleic acid’. It also contains omega-3 and 9 fatty acids, carotenoids, tocopherols, tocotrienols, plant sterols and phospholipids. Palmitoleic acid is thought to support healthy immune system function and problem skin conditions.
