Selenium is concentrated in the kidneys, liver, spleen, pancreas and testes. It forms part of the body’s own antioxidant enzyme ‘glutathione peroxidase’. Its antioxidant effect is enhanced by vitamin E. Selenium is involved in making prostaglandins; hormone-like substances which perform many roles; and in making thyroid hormone and co-enzyme Q10. It is important for healthy cardiovascular, immune, liver and male reproductive systems functions, eyes, skin, hair, pancreas and joints. It helps protect against toxic metals.
