Sodium is an ‘electrolyte’ and is concentrated outside body cells. It works with potassium and chloride to maintain healthy body water balance and normal blood pressure. Processed foods contain high amounts of sodium. It is depleted through excessive sweating. Too much sodium contributes to high blood pressure, whereas too little contributes to low blood pressure. It exists in food and in the body as sodium chloride, i.e. salt.
