Vitamin B1

Thiamin was the first B vitamin ‘discovered’, hence ‘B1’. Deficiency causes beri-beri.  Vitamin B1 helps breaks down carbohydrate for energy. It is important for normal growth and for maintaining healthy skin and brain function. It can act as an antioxidant.  Extra may be needed during stress, pregnancy, breastfeeding and illness. Magnesium helps convert B1 to its active form. Tea, coffee, alcohol, nitrites, sulphites, the Pill and some drugs can hinder absorption.
